Beijing: US apologised for confusing China with Taiwan | Bangkok Post: news


Chinese delegation members arrange flags before a photo-op with President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G-20 session in Hamburg. The gaffe was one of a handful of misnomers issued by the White House during the summit meeting. The Republic of China flub was awkward for Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory. Mr Trump later suggested that he might not be bound by the One China policy, but he reaffirmed it during a call with Mr Xi in February. The similarity of China's and Taiwan's formal names has produced embarrassments for the White House before.
